dapperreads 's review for:
The Serpent King
by Jeff Zentner
Spoilers ahead
First: the trigger warning I needed-
This book gets dark quick. One of the main characters is killed by some crackheads and another main character dives into a deep depression and almost commits suicide. That would have been nice to know before diving into this book.
.
Now, after that- I swear I was reading a different book! While they two remaining characters remembered their friend fondly, he was more of an after thought. As in, they would do something and then be like oh our friend would have loved this. Which is realistic, but it didn’t feel genuine to me. Aside from that, at the beginning of the book, the one character is gay, but then ends up in a relationship with a member of the opposite sex? It was never brought up again that this character was ever gay or that they realized they were bisexual or anything else. It’s like they just never mentioned it before. I’m so confused by that. An explanation was necessary and we didn’t get one. Unless I missed it, which is possible since I was still struggling with the suicide attempt when the relationship began. Alas, this was a book I was looking forward to and was disappointed in. I really don’t like writing negative reviews, but this book at least needs the above trigger warning attached to it for anyone else that may need it.
