Too Bright to See
by Kyle Lukoff
I was really enjoying this story up until the climax. I loved the idea of Bug's Uncle guiding him from the afterlife into figuring out who he is. It was a fresh and original way to tackle helping someone figure out their identity.
My opinion changed with the haircut scene. That bothered me so much. It made me feel like his Uncle was forcing him into his identify instead of being patient and letting Bug figure it out. It felt so wrong because this wasn't something Bug hadn't consented to. I know for many that shaving or cutting hair may not be a big thing, but it should have been Bug's body and choice. It left a sour taste in my mouth. I would of loved a scene with Moira or his mother going with him to the barber to supporting him in his change.
It seemed more instead of a story of Bug coming into his identity, he was forced not guided into it. The story could have ended with him figuring things out slowly. Maybe that is just my heteronormative self talking and I'm wrong, but I did not like how the ending events of the book unfolded.
