Enemy Within
by Tal Bauer
•spoilers for Enemies of the State, book 1 and Enemy of my Enemy, book 2•
There will be some minor spoilers for this book in my review - mostly events that happen but not of the twists and turns. Read at your own risk!
Where to even begin. I thought the last book was intense, but I was not nearly prepared for the stress of this book! Ethan, Jack, and Sergey are in the deep wilderness of Siberia working on stopping Madigan. As they cross through Russia and into the Arctic, they are pushed beyond their limits physically and mentally. Bonds of loyalty and love are tested for everyone as they try to fight against those enemies loudly against them and those hidden within their circle.
Ethan and Jack have survived the tumult of the last book and are now stronger than ever. The world tries to tear them apart but their love is inevitable. I loved seeing them fight side by side to do the right thing while also fighting for their love. There are so many moments where they could just give up, but one thing that will always be true is that they love each and nothing can break that. They deserve every moment of their well-earned happily ever after.
Adam and Faisal probably made me cry the most. They have been my favorite couple since those prequel chapters. You could just feel the depth of their love. They take romance and sacrifice for their love to the next level. Though they have a happy ending, I'm going to hold out hope that we get a book or two about them. Sasha and Sergey were a surprise to me in this series. They have a ton to work out going forward but their connection is undeniable. Seeing them slowly fall together was a sweet call back to Jack and Ethan's beginnings, and I'm looking forward to see where Sasha and Sergey's story goes.
There are three endearing couples, but the supporting characters (who aren't backstabbing little bitches) deserve all the love. Scott's friendship for Ethan goes so deep that he follows Jack across the world, straight into the madness, and risks so much for them both. Elizabeth, Pete, Welby, and Levi hold down the White House and care so much. I love that Ethan and Jack have such a strong backing in DC.
There are so many details. Tal mentions the research he did at the end of the book, and I think that dedication deserves 5 stars itself. I know nothing of submarines, but I was on the edge of my seat as they crossed the Bering Strait and could follow well enough with what was happening. And then the level of detail for the Muslim religious formalities to the Russian culture and history, it was amazing.
This entire series was a wild ride from beginning to end. There's crushing heartbreak, stinging betrayal, wild passion, unfailing loyalty, and soulmate deep love. I don't usually read political thriller/suspense type stories so I had put this off, but I'm so glad I read this! It's easy enough to follow and filled with a perfect mix of romance and plot. Sasha and Seregy's story continues and there's also some short stories on Tal's website. So happy I don't have to say goodbye to these characters yet.
