Den of Vipers
by K.A. Knight
I have a bone to pick with this book. Several bones, actually. As someone who loves dark romances, I had HIGH HOPES for den of vipers. I heard about the gun scene, I knew about knifeplay, I was prepared for the WORST. And in some way...it was the worst. But not because of the content. The content is fine. I don't mind plotless smut stories.
What I did have a problem with was 1) the writing and 2) the main character. Stay with me for just a sec - trust me!
1. Many of my friends have heard my opinion on the matter: a child wrote this. I mean that in a very judgemental way. At one point, the word "vaj-jay-jay" was said and I immediately had to take a break. I just???? The sentence "hugs me like a teddy" also made an appearance. You're telling me this was written by an adult for other adults...? No...? You're lying? The writing style is just so....childish.
This brings me to the main character, because oh my god.
2. Three words to describe the main character: immature, unhinged, and....unbelievable? In a bad way. She just wasn't a believable character. And okay fiiiiine she's not exactly you're average Joe, she's been through SO MUCH but that's what makes her actions/thoughts so disconnected. Her story doesn't line up with her personality. She'll go from being so immature and unhinged to giving the best life advice ever? The whiplash I received from both her and her love interests made this almost unreadable.
Side note, the formatting of this novel was also really weird. Like the blocking of texts/paragraphs felt so chunky and I just had a hard time actually reading the words on the page.
ANYWAYS. i'm recommending it to everyone. the dark parts are dark, the predictable "plotline" is predictable, the smut is SMUTTY. you get what you get.
