Set the Record Straight
by Hannah Bonam-Young
Can I just read l Hannah all the time? K, thanks!
Gah, I loved this. This story is so special! Evan and Clara are wonderful, complex humans. It is the best example of friends to lovers being the only way instalove should exist and how good it can be. I laughed, felt seen, felt empowered, teared up, and so much more. The fact that this all happened in a novella that didn't feel anything but the perfect length?! Incredible!!
As I told Hannah while I was reading, the way she writes about neurodivergency as part of everyday life is how it should be!!!! Including hyperfixation comments and mentioning stims but not in a "let me educate you about ADHD and Autism" way is beautiful and just another example of how her writing is so full of heart and insight into the human mind.
Reread: I have said it before but this book is so special, both in general but also to me. Reading it last year made me feel seen because I hadn't widely come out as queer yet, and this year it hit me for new reasons along with the old. Being a late bloomer is so well portrayed here as well as the intersection of religion and homophobia. I can't believe I waited a year to read this again. It is short and sweet and sexy and I need to read it more often. Also, seeing my name in the acknowledgements hit me again more than I expected. I am so grateful for Hannah.
Reread again: I love all of Hannah's books but this one will always hold a special place in my heart. Partially because I helped do one of the final proofreading passes before it was published, and it was the first book I ever did anything like that with. But also because while it's a holiday novella, really it's a childhood best friends to lovers, queer awakening with great ADHD, Autism, demisexual, and "I don't know what I am but I am into and love this woman" rep. This is my fourth or fifth time reading it and I'll continue to read it every holiday season.
