I’m actually really bummed to say I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I had hoped to and I 100% blame the publishers for this one. This book was marketed as a historical mystery and I don’t think it should have been. Yes, there was a small mystery mixed in but this was 100% straight historical fiction and I would have enjoyed it so much more going into it knowing that. I kept waiting for the mystery to be a bigger part of the story and some intrigue and it never came and it made the book so disappointing to me.
I will also say I didn’t love Martha during this book. I thought she was very preachy at times and very judgmental of women in far worse situations than she was all because she didn’t like their husbands … I think she did a lot of incredible things in her life but those two instances made me really question her.
I do understand why so many people loved this story and it really is a powerful story but it just wasn’t what I was expecting and it didn’t quite have the same impact as a result.
