dermkat 's review for:
Beautiful Country
by Qian Julie Wang
I heard about this book while attending a virtual library conference in June, where the author was on a panel introducing upcoming releases. The way she poke of her story as an undocumented child in the US during the 90s captivated my interest immediately and I put it on my TBR. I was the first person in line for the physical copy at my library but these days it is easier for me to read digital books due to the pain and stiffness in my hands, so once the digital version was available for holds, I got on that list instead (it took a little longer to get to me after the release date but not by much!). Reading Qian's story was very eye opening to me, as I don't have anyone in my closest circle with lived experience of immigrating or living undocumented (that's I'm aware of). Being from Canada, I know the process is different as well from what it is in the US. I am so grateful that Qian was willing to share her story. Bonus: her writing is beautiful and kept me interested in a way that not all nonfiction/memoirs do.
