Garrett
by Sawyer Bennett
I actually had a hard time getting into this one - I’d make it a few chapters and then put it down to try again. I did that a couple of times and then when I saw that Zack’s story was coming out, and I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanted to read it, I knew I had to try again. Apparently the third time’s the charm because not only did I finish it but I actually enjoyed it quite a lot. I think there were a couple of issues for me my first few times – I could see where their problems were going to be a mile away plus, I wasn’t all that big a fan of Garrett. I thought after Alex that I’d love him but he comes across not so much like a modern day rake (which I love) and more of just a manwhore. Once I got to know him a little better though I actually liked him a lot.
And even though I knew where things were going to go wrong I decided to try to just sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s a little bit of a secret (but not one that is hidden very long) - Olivia’s issue is that she has been fighting cancer and she’s about to fight it again. When she meets flirtatious and oh-so-sexy Garrett she decides to take the chance to enjoy some fun sex with the hottie hockey player. Only it turns into something a little more serious. So of course her health issues become the huge trouble spot for the two. Mixed in with how unappealing I found Garrett at the beginning and I just wasn’t sure I wanted to face that, but he quickly changed my mind and I loved the dedicated boyfriend he became.
Bennett is a great story teller and her characters are complex with deep issues, so once I got started I quickly found myself drawn into their story. The ending was a little difficult to read because both of them needed a good smack but it just made their HEA all the better.
