Listen, before you get put off by the three star let me preface this by explaining a three star for me is still a great book!

‘What To Eat During The Apocalypse’ by Vladimir Stefan can only be described as dystopia meets Terry Pratchett. It’s constantly poking fun at itself, brimming with humour and a touch too believable for comfort.

Apocalypse strikes and between uncertain death, a fascist government and existential crises Dom finds solace in cooking (and sarcasm). His search for recipes anchors this crazy ride and was something I’d never seen before. But hey, you gotta eat even in the apocalypse.

Mango the cat is the star of the show really. I would love to read a spin-off on Mango’s adventures. And he has the best line in the book: “Meow, meow bitch.”

I really enjoyed some of the topics this book explores, jumping from deep explorations of some hefty topics to insane conspiracy theories with ease. It serves as a stark warning and, once again, feels like a fitting book to read at this time.

So why only three stars? For me, the writing at times was clunky/jumpy. I wanted to spend more time connecting with the characters and learning more. Some times things moved really quickly and other times very slowly, and this could be really jarring.

If you’re looking for sarcasm and laughter can, to watch Dom go from apathetic to unlikely hero then this is the book for you. This was a really great dystopian book and one of certainly want to read more about!
