House of Earth and Blood
by Sarah J. Maas
SJM did not disappoint, YET AGAIN.
I definitely have to say that the first half of this book was a little dry. There were too many characters with backgrounds I didn't know for way too long. The world is pretty extensive too and I feel like they could have been introduced better, in a more exciting way. Though they were introduced. I was willing to get through it because I've read SJM before and I know that she's willing to use an entire book as a set up for the series, so I knew that there would be more action and excitement later on, I just had to get through the set up.
But it was worth it. The second half of the book is extraordinary. I was HOOKED. I read the entire second half (about 500 pages or so) in a little over a day because I was just so enthrawled in it. The characters made more sense. The relationships between characters made more sense. The world made more sense. All of the dryness at the beginning really comes together well for the action of the book. It was well worth the investment. I am SO EXCITED for the rest of the series.
I will mention that, though I think this book was fantastic, I definitely think it's not a book that you pick up on a random Tuesday evening for a light read. It takes a little investment, and I wish I was a little more mentally prepared for the investment before I went in and I probably would have enjoyed the beginning a little more. SJM has developed as a writer so much throughout her career, and so it's no surprise it's a little more dense and adult.
