I really enjoyed this book. The complex worldbuilding and character work are brilliant, and the writing style is very easy to read.
There aren't really heroes and villians as such in this book. Some characters are more likeable than others, and some do horrible things, but every character essentially believes that what they are doing is the right thing to protect themselves, their families and their peoples. We see events from several points of view.
For the first two thirds of the book, I enjoyed the story but wasn't fully gripped by it. That changed with the climactic events in the final third, which left me desperate to read book 2.
