My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing
2.0

I am so disappointed right now!

I was expecting something better from a book that is marketed as this book about a married couple that kills people.
I expected less family drama and one character being murderous, while the other just bumbles along and behaves stupidly and let themselves be completely mislead by everything.

I also absolutely HATED that this book threaded being Deaf as a cute little pick up.
Excuse me?
Sure.
Because everyone with Disabilities doesn't already have enough problems being not only taking seriously but actually accepted and taken by their word.
Let's make it be a quirky thing for the main guy to introduce himself as deaf when he tries to pick up women.
Also HATED that it was actually said in the book that women love feeling like they are taking care of him in that moment when they order for him?!
excuse me? What?
NO!?

Also i really disliked how women were portrayed in this book in general.
To me it felt as if saying that a women doesn't have any family around her, doesn't have a lot of friends or a specific time to meet others outside her work, isn't in a relationship but enjoys spending time at her own home alone doing what ever she does there is pathetic.
Maybe i read too much into that. But it was actually said that those women wont be missed.

And excuse me? Why?
Just because someone isn't constantly out with other people or in a relationship -let alone what kind of stupid stuff is it to automatically say "she doesn't have a boyfriend" its not as if other type of relationships exist right?
But beside that... its also very possible that someone just doesn't want to be in a relationship? Is happy being on her own?
Its not necessary to HAVE a person in their life to be happy.
To me this felt so much like the author decided that you need to have a partner to be happy and especially a male partner helps with that.
Because can i just point out that a person that is constantly on the move and nobody ever really knows where they are because they are always meeting someone or going somewhere?
That person can also be gone for a few days before anyone noticed they are actually gone and missing instead of just up and about as usual.
So this whole think about it having to be someone thats all alone?
Bullshit!

Also can i just mention that there are a handful of moments where they are talking about a serial killer that was active 10 or so years ago and killed all kinds of women and nobody was really save, since he took them from their homes, work, outside, after going out with friends... nobody was save for women.
But the male character actually COMPLAINED about how hard it was during that time to pick up women in bars because nobody wanted to meet with a strange male since they couldn't be sure that that wasn't the killer. And how horrible was that for HIM?
What?

Sure women feel unsafe everywhere but sure, its about the poor guys that are unable to pick up women because they are being safe and trying to survive in a very unsave and dangerous situation.
But i am sure the poor poor men suffered a lot worse.

Was this book written by a woman?
Really?!?!

On top of that we have the wife - who is the main earner in the family as a relator while he is a tennis coach- he is home earlier and has generally a looser timeline than his wife.
You know who does all the housework and makes sure the kids did their homework and have everything they need for their next day?
The wife.

On top of that there are some mental health issues with the daughter which are very shortly addressed and then something comes out towards the end which explains one thing about it but not the rest, but nothing else is addressed about the rest of them? She's just magically healed from them? After everything?
Mhm.

Also that ending in general?!

Could it be any easier to "solve" it all and make it easy for all the "better" characters?

Maybe i am too picky, but i think this book went a bit too over the top with trying to write "bad" characters and instead ended up with just badly done characters.

Everyone was unhappy and did nothing about it other than complain or have inner monologes about it, one characters was clearly the actual bad guy and ended up exactly that.
So there was no twist or surprise or anything that wasn't able to be foreseen very early on in the book.

I also absolutely HATED the cheating aspects in this book and i don't understand why it was necessary to include them into this book since basically everything could have been done just the same without it. And utterly stupid "Blackmail by your own son" situation could have been left out.

And on top of this while the writing itself wasn't horrible. It also was very simple and easy. I could say it really read like a Debut but that sounds really mean? And i don't mean that the writing was bad. It wasn't. It was just not great and i think it didnt work that great for what the book tried to do.

All in all?

I expected a lot more from this.
I wanted more from this.
I wanted this power duo murder couple.
Instead i got a lug warm pair with Personal issues left and right and troubled kids.
And a lot of negative feeling writing towards women that are independent.

This didn't work for me, clearly.
Oh well.
