The Chestnut Man by Søren Sveistrup

Søren Sveistrup writing about characters playing League of Legends in this novel:

(Or maybe the translator had no idea what they were doing with those parts? Either way, gif stands.)

This could have shaved off a good 50 pages of inner narrative and it would have felt much more of a tight thriller. As it was, the pacing felt all over the place. The characterization overall was questionable, and I especially didn't need 85% of the male characters who had 5 pages of narrative be complete misogynistic jerks.

The mystery was pretty interesting and INCREDIBLY FUCKED UP. I honestly only finished this by skim reading after the 55% mark just so I could find out who did it and why, but I ended up regretting even that decision. I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to buy into how much this flies off the rails in the climax. Sometimes I enjoy a really balls to the wall climax in a thriller, if done entertainingly. This just felt like a slog, in the end.
