This is Going to Hurt is eye opening, utterly hilarious to the point that it had me properly laughing out loud on my walks to and from work, delightfully disgusting and, in many ways, utterly heart breaking. Using humour, honesty and a proper, strong dose of British sarcasm, Adam Kay takes you on the impossibly demanding, terrifying and harrowing journey of a junior doctor, simultaneously highlighting the brilliance and the struggles of the NHS.

It’s a powerful, powerful memoir and one I would recommend any Brit to read in order to better understand the insane pressure put on our doctors, the crazy hours, the strain on their personal lives and their own mental health as they strive to do their very best by the patients every day. It certainly shines a new light on our government’s repeated attempts to villainise those going above and beyond to keep us all healthy and alive despite lack of funds, lack of support and, for the most part, lack of adequate pay. With the surge in medically themed memoirs, this definitely wont be the last I pick up.
Extra recommendation for the audio! I think listening to Adam narrate actually made the funny bits all the funnier... plus I kind of think he sounds like Will from The Inbetweeners.
