An exceptionally well-written, palpably eerie gothic masterpiece that, despite being full of all the romantic yearning, haunted house spooks, and glistening dark secrets that define the genre, cleverly makes colonialism the rightful villain. I’m speechless with awe.
➸ Trigger warnings for rape discussed, period-typical misogyny, racism, colourism and religious discrimination, graphic body horror, blood and gore depiction including dead bodies, death of a father recounted, death of a wife mentioned, murder and attempted murder, housefire, poverty, war themes including mentions of military deployment and state-sanctioned executions (Mexican War of Independence), and colonialism.
