Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi
5.0

“But to be alive in the world, every day, as we are given more and more and more, as the nature of ‘what we can handle’ changes and our methods for how we handle it change, too, that’s something of a miracle.” I loved Homegoing but I love Transcendent Kingdom more. It reminded me of Americanah and When They Call You A Terrorist. Yaa Gyasi is a beautiful writer and she writes absolutely heartbreaking stories about the most incredible, strong characters. Gifty has experienced real trauma and she becomes a brilliant, curious woman with a huge heart and steadfast determination. Ellie and I have been sending books to each other for 2 years now, and this is my favorite so far- Thank you, Ellie for sharing this with me. A must read.
