The Starless Sea
by Erin Morgenstern
Oy, this is a tough one to review. I have spent quite a bit of time with this book trying to get into it and understand it. I DNF’d the hard cover and started over with the audio, so I dedicated about 20 hours to the story! The various narrators were wonderful and I’m glad that I listened to the audio version, but at about 70% the story completely lost me and was difficult for me to follow. I know I really struggle with magical realism and fantasy, but this book took magical realism further than The Night Circus. I do acknowledge that the story was beautifully written, the world building was very detailed and intricate (that might have been what was difficult for me) but I’m sure many people will love this book.
