Scythe - Die Hüter des Todes by Neal Shusterman
3.0

love the premise, really enjoyed the characters and the twists in this book but there was also sooo much that didn’t make any sense to me?

like this apparently all knowing computer things called thunderhead? but things happen that apparently nobody noticed? didn’t we just learn in the book the thunderhead notices everything?
someone dies and all of a sudden no camera is working! Ups! too bad that super brain computer didn’t notice a thing at all!
bit if a contradiction there?

also this was supposed to be this perfection of humanity with nobody being able to get sick or die of natural causes, and then we have scythes that kill with guns and knifes? like what?? why?? isn’t there are more sophisticated way to kill?!
and if not wouldn’t it be high time for it to be discovered?
i mean yes there was that pill one had only to bite in but come on russia was why ahead with that since i don’t know how long!

also speaking of that i found the way the scythes decided on who to naturalize (or what ever the word the english original used for the killing) was way to random! combining the super computer and supposedly superhumanity it’s basically “rock paper scissors”? or “that guys ugly let’s end him!”
i mean: what??
there is no actual system?
you have all those superior resources and can’t use it to find people that actually deserve killing?
has humanity really became so genetically altered that there is no longer abuse? rape? bullying and hate crimes of any kind?
i mean fantastic if that’s the case and do go head then with the “tick tack tow” method but if not why not focus on those?
i would always prefer a random child no later being killed over a guy who jumps into a river after his dog!
just sayin’!

there are some glaringly obvious holes that bothered me quiet a bit.

and while the writing was good, it also had a tendency to ramble quiet a bit and this book could have been at least 50-100 pages shorter and done everything the same if the ramblings would have been cut out.
i mean i can’t complain about that too too much since i have the tendency to ramble on endlessly too, but still. it’s clearly noticeable in this book.

also while i enjoyed the characters and i enjoyed them both equally and didn’t mind either perspective, i also didn’t really connect or come to care for either one of them in a way.

it’s still a super fun read and the idea is great and it thankfully has very little romance so that was nice as well.

it’s also a very fast read and while it’s brutal it’s also fun, as strange as it is to say about a book willed with murder and mayhem!

also can i just note that this book so very clearly shows that psychologists and other mental health professionals are clearly very, very needed?
because most of not all of those scythes could need at least ten years of daily therapy to maybe get their heads back in right!
