Hearing Mr. Charles's story as he read it himself was enlightening. I learned so much about his life that I had never known.
I appreciated the note at the beginning. It specifically pointed out that the conversations were not necessarily accurate but were the best RuPaul could remember. As I got into the book I found there to be a noticeable gap in the level of intelligence presented during the narrative compared to any dialogue conversation quotes. While the former implied the author was well read and educated, whether by school or life, the latter reminded me of children's first stories they write in school. The dichotomy of the two stood out in a noticeable way as I listened. Ultimately, I feel it detracted from the story of life being shared. I endeavored to listen past that and did enjoy the story.
It was amazing to learn about how self belief, hard work, and smarts truly got RuPaul the fame he knew he would have one day. I would have liked to hear more about his relationship with his husband. Their story was begun but not finished within this book.
