This is a sweet historical sapphic romance that takes place after the Crimean War and follows Harriet, whose husband died in the war, and Lydia, whose brother also died in the war. Harriet is new to the village called Bickerton after inheriting a house with some friends. She meets Lydia when Lydia finds her escaped prize rooster Walter near her home. Lydia explains the chicken contest to Harriet after finding Walter with some chickens that were thought to be extinct. Lydia and Harriet get to know each other and become closer. I really enjoyed this and I'm glad I didn't read the whole summary because if I'd known this novella also takes place around Christmas I may have chosen to not read it even if it is by Olivia Waite. The way Harriet and Lydia support each other through their grief was nice to read. Also I really like that this novella has protagonists who are either in their thirties or forties. This is the second book I've read by Olivia Waite and I'm definitely eager to read more of her books.
