Dune Messiah
by Frank Herbert
I originally read this book as a paperback, with a gap from starting to finishing of about a year, in 2014/15. At that time I rated it 3 stars.
I’ve just finished listening to it on audiobook, with a small cast reading it, and I enjoyed it a lot more this time. I think I picked up a lot more nuisance on a second read, and with a few voices to help me follow, and without the gap between first and second book (and finishing the whole thing in just a few days.)
Some minor spoilers follow.
I plan to continue with the series right away - I hope to finish it before the new Dune movie is released. I’m finding the world building very satisfying, the characters rich (though I wish the women weren’t quite so ... what was the phrase used... smelled of rutting? Their sexuality is not their identity, and marrying or mating them doesn’t have to be significant identification as they age. That was a bit of a disappointment.), and the governance interesting. The adherence to custom at the end was poignant- I wonder how the next book will start. From the title I suspect I know.
