The Larks Still Bravely Singing
by Aster Glenn Gray
This book surprised me pleasantly. I'm not a big reader of historical fiction so I don't have much to compare it with but I was amazed at how immersive it was. The writing style, vocabulary, the way the main character thought about life, it was all very on point.
And I must say I quite like the way the author handled the WWI topic—or rather its aftermath—and characters' disabilities (and I'm not talking only about the physical ones). It was an important part of the story, but it wasn't overpowering, it wasn't wallowing in self-pity.
The romance was a slow-burn one, just how I like it.
