Think Virgin Suicides and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. This book had that slow, intense, confusing, vibe. Like you know something is off but you can't pinpoint it until there's blood spilled.
I think this story is for people who enjoy having philosophical debates about the universe and the spiritual significance of seeing a butterfly in the dark.
Mars is a gender fluid teen and the son of a politician. He has always felt isolated from his family and morns the loss of his twin sister. Even before her death, she was already gone.
This story follows up returning to her beloved summer camp in an attempt to learn more about her. What she was like, what she liked, and who her friends are.
The events that go down are worthy of an M. Night Shyamalan movie or maybe A24.
As a reader I was on edge. I knew there was danger but wasn't sure where the source was. How far the reach was.
In really liked this but I didn't realize it until I got to the end. If that makes sense. It held my attention, left me guessing, and the reveals and ending were impressive.
Like I would have stood up and clapped. But the tone is not adventurous, it's murky, subdued, emotional, weird, and memorable.
I don't know if I would recommend this to just anyone. It has an acquired taste.
