rellaviir 's review for:
My overall rating is based on the average for all the stories. Below is my rating for each of the stories in this wonderful anthology. 4.36/5 stars (because when you do math this is what happens.)
The Blood of Imuriv by Renee Ahdieh: 3.5/5 stars
I wasn't super keen on this one. I thought it was enjoyable enough where I would read it again, but I wasn't constantly thinking about it afterwards. Part of this could have simply been because I was confused about it while I was reading it. Maybe I'm the only one.
Jack by Amerii: 4/5 stars:
This was quite beautiful actually and a nice take on Jack and the Beanstalk. Definitely wanted to side with the villian on this one.
Gwen and Art and Lance by Soman Chainani: 5/5 stars
I couldn't eat this story up fast enough. I loved the formatting; text conversation among different people. Absolutely sided with the bad "guy" on this one. It was a quick read because of the format, and while I wanted more, (I always want more if I love something) I was very satisfied with how this one turned out.
Shirley & Jim by Susan Dennard: 3.75/5 stars
I liked the story, but I didn't absolutely love this one. I love the way Susan writes, I wasn't hooked on the characters though.
The Blessings of Little Wants by Sarah Enni: 4/5 stars
I didn't write any notes on this one... oops. I know I really enjoyed the story while I read it though.
The Sea Witch by Marissa Meyer: 5/5 stars
Five stars is not enough for this story. Oh my goodness, if this is how Marissa Meyer writes, I need to hurry up and read The Lunar Chronicles. This story will ABSOLUTELY make you sympathize and understand why villians turn out the way they do. I was totally on Nerit's side for the entirety of this story. In no way was she a villian in my opinion. And revenge is a beautiful thing (am I slightly villianous for saying this?) If you don't want to read any of the other stories, I highly recommend you at least read this story. It will change your life. Please, please, please give me more Nerit story. What do I have to do?
Beautiful Venom by Cindy Pon: 5/5 stars
This is another fantastic story that 5 stars is not enough for. This story actually dealt with a lot of sensitive subjects as well. Victim shaming being the biggest. I was glad that it was part of the story. I think Cindy did a fantastic job portraying what this would be like, and I hope someone who does not have the right view of victim shaming will read this, and understand how wrong it is. I won't go into extreme detail, so as to not spoil anything, but this is incredible and EVERYONE needs to read it.
Death Knell by Victoria Schwab: 5/5 stars
Who doesn't know that Victoria is the absolute master of villians. She personified death in this story, and that's really all you need to know.
Marigold by Samantha Shannon: 4/5 stars
Of course, another story that makes you side with the villian. Almost made me cry actually.
You, You, It's All About You by Adam Silvera: 4.5/5 stars
This one gave me chills at the end. I can't say I sided with the villian on this one, which is a good thing. But sometimes you just don't hate or love the villian, they're just a well developed villian who is good at being villanous. And that makes me neutral towards the character, which is not a bad thing. I love to hate, and hate to love the bad "guy." But this one was just purely selfish. I loved it.
Julian Breaks Every Rule by Andrew Smith: 4/5 stars
Can I just say that I HATE cliffhangers... especially when there is no hope of knowing what happens. With that being said, you are left wondering if the main character is actually a villian, or a product of coincidence. Which makes me like him more.
Indigo and Shade by April Genevieve Tucholke: 4/5 stars
Ever have that moment where you know something is coming and it surprises you anyways? Yeah, that happened to me here. I liked the Beauty & the Beast take on this. Was gripped on the first page, and well, I'm from Colorado so how could I hate this? I wouldn't hate anything well written though.
Sera by Nicola Yoon: 5/5 stars
At this point, I wasn't sure how Nicola was going to write a villian, especially a gender bent God of War (which made me think of Wonder Woman the whole time.) I loved the build up of this, ending first, characters build up through childhood, characters POV. Also, I hated the mother. She was more of a villian in my honest opinion. Hey Nicola, give us more villain stories ok?
