I love when authors take source material and run with it, making something more extraordinary than the original. Victor LaValle did that here. He took what is a racist and xenophobic story and transformed it into a critique of the original while creating a story and characters and setting that made for a fantastic piece of horror that stands completely on its own. It was terrifying and brilliant.
