I am not really sure what John Knowles wanted to achieve with this novel. I found it had some very interesting characters involved and it chronicles life in a boarding school quite well. The political climate with the backdrop of World War II is always there but could not really piece the story together with the characters and at times it was quite boring especially because it was so short.
