I am astonished that Bayron managed to create a world around one of the most overused fairytales. It transcends the status of “retelling” and writes its own tale. The world building and plot are phenomenal, and the characters were very good. The romance was adorable (although I would’ve liked to see more of it, but it’s not the main focus of the story so I understand). I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed the romance because it’s my first time reading a sapphic romance and it was just as good as a f/m one. I have no qualms about giving this book a solid five stars, and I will be recommending it to everyone I know. Now, it wasn’t an emotional read, but definitely had some thrill to it. I got angry a few times, which is either proof of good writing or proof that I get riled up easily when women are getting oppressed. Probably both. I am really enjoying this new trope of oppressive magical society where a strong young woman leads a revolt, like dystopian but make it fantasy. This book in general reminded me of a more diverse and mature Land of Stories, most similar to A Tale of Magic. Can’t wait to read Kathryn Bayron’s next book, This Poison Heart.
