Elysium by Jennifer Marie Brissett

More like music than a novel? Structured like a musical composition rather than prose.

The rapid fire staging, the way the scenes are set, the lights come on and then "action " is more the stuff of the stage or film than prose as well .

I enjoyed tremendously the author's form and genre-breaking way of presenting the story as art forcing the reader into a role akin to a theatre or concert goer.

The downside was that some of the scenes and characters are more compelling than others.

Many sections , images and storylines feel uncomfortably derivative - they inhabit a space that masquerades as speculative but even those are uplifted by their inventive presentation.
