I am at a loss as to why I did not hear about this novel sooner. (When placed into the reality of the world, and more specifically the world of publishing, I understand, however that does not mean this slight is warranted in the least.)
I will admit Netflix's decision to create a TV series inspired by this book, featuring one of my favorite actors, is what brought this book into my hands, and I am so glad it did.
The story follows Ingrid as she navigates building a career in a very white male-dominated work field as an Asian American woman.
The culture of this "boys club" law firm she works at is jarring but sadly unsurprising. The lack of punishment and repercussions from truly horrible behavior committed by members of the firm shows such a level of the toxicity of classism in the field too.
The level of performative "solutions" to these problems is appalling and you feel deeply for Ingrid as she navigates these challenges.
All that being said. Ingrid is truly a relatable character, who at the same time, gives inspiration to others. She is not perfect, she does fall, but in the end, she is a survivor and learns from it all to become stronger.
She is the kind of female character we really need these days, and I for one can't wait to see her brought onto the screen and to gain a wider reach.
