Remembrance by Rita Woods

Remembrance is a beautifully told historical fiction novel with a touch of magical realism.

We see this story through the lives of 3 women. Gaelle had lost most of her family in a Haiti earthquake and now resides in Ohio. She also can warm up a person by touching them. She meets Winter, an African-American woman, at her job at a care facility. Winter doesn't speak but Gaelle is drawn to her anyway.

Mother Abigail has made a safe place for slaves along the railroad. Her magic will touch each of the other two women's lives. Winter-to take up the mantle of protecting Remembrance once Mother Abigail is gone from this world and Gaelle-to learn what her "warm" touch really means.

I was so fascinated with the character of Josiah. He's Mother Abigail's constant companion but is timeless in his age. Always made me wonder how long he has actually been around. He's like the protector of Remembrance's protector!
