Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus
2.0

Far too long for such a basic story. Two interchangeable teenage girls disappear. Since we know little about them other than one looked like Snow White and one didn't, it's hard to be too upset. Local Golden Boy Tobias Sartorius is imprisoned for the crimes, and therefore obviously didn't commit them. After an 11-year pause for plot development he is released. Then there are some more murders/disappearances. Policeman whose wife is cheating on him and Policewoman who has problems with building permits for her farmhouse investigate when they're not moaning about their personal problems.

All the female characters in this novel are selfish, manipulative sex-predators and all the men are blind idiots who spend their time drinking and worrying about which particular femme fatale is causing them trouble. The book lacks any charatcers but is replete with clichés: the memory-block that means the protagonists doesn't know if he committed the crimes or not, the young girl with a strange resemblance to the murder victim who attracts the killer's attention, the unscrupulous local big-wig who owns the town, the loner with mental health problems who is misunderstood and blamed for the crime etc. Plus the various culprits are almost immediately identifiable and their motivations simultaneously weak and obvious. The next 350 pages are therfore a complete waste of the reader's time. Glad it's over.
