Stay Gold
by Tobly McSmith
I wanted to love this book so much– it’s desperately needed and has the promise of a wonderful YA love story. The presence of strong trans characters is all but non-existent in fiction and is a group (among many) that deserves representation. But the writing was simplistic at best, cringey at worst. Plot points are glossed over and unrealistic, and the characters feel underdeveloped. I gave it three stars because this is the first ‘mainstream’ YA book I’ve ever read that has a transgender person as a main character, and that in and of itself is worth at least two stars. Other than that for me, the writing was only worth one star. However, all that said, this book is important. Everybody deserves to have a cheesy love story that they identify with and this is a great way to introduce literature with LGBTQA+ characters to the YA audience.
