A Lady's Choice follows a young woman named Sarah through her journey to fight for women's right to vote. Readers first see her in a small town in Tennessee taking care of her sick widowed mother, though she longs to return to Memphis and the suffrage group. When she meets a charming lawyer named Alex, she falls in love until she finds out he will be working at an anti-suffrage firm in Memphis. Their choices in love and the fight to vote take them in directions they never saw coming.
For the first half of this book, I honestly was not enjoying it very much. While the scenes and settings were done very well, I felt little depth in Alex and Sarah. Their love was extremely quick and with them, as well as other characters, they were all very open with their feelings, so much so that I questioned if they were lying at times. For a while, it seemed like there was no mystery to uncover or hidden feelings to be revealed. It seemed very predictable.
However, a little over halfway into the story, the plot really took off in a direction I hadn't seen coming. It really brought the historical side of it to life. The suffragists struggles became the focus, as well as a thrilling case of murder that took me by surprise. This half of the book is what got my staying-up-reading-all-night habit to kick in. It made the difference between two and three stars. If you are already reading the first half and maybe struggling with it, I would recommend sticking it out, because you're in for some nice surprises.
Overall, 3/5 stars. The second half, while enjoyable, didn't make up for the first half for me. If you like historical romances, maybe with a slower pace in plot, then this would be a good book for you.
