Tokyo Ever After
by Emiko Jean
I adored Tokyo Ever After. I was a sucker for the Princess Diaries vibe with a Japanese twist. I can see why some would think that the plot is less creative since it's extremely similar. Izumi is a Japanese-American growing up in California with only her mom. All of a sudden she finds out that she's Japanese royalty. Definitely sounds familiar. Izumi ends up visiting Japan to meet her father and extended family to find that she doesn't quite fit in. This book started out as a journey for Izumi to find out where she comes from, with the desire to belong, but then it quickly turns into a love story. I don't mind the love story but I can't get behind how that plays out. I really enjoyed the personalities in each character. The ending was very quick and messy but I can appreciate that the author didn't want to leave any loose ends. The plot has some potential but the characters were strong and overall I really enjoyed this book.
