The Ruins by Scott Smith
4.0

That was so nasty, I loved it.

so i was just innocently reading old curiosity shop and feeling all warm, cozy and a little too wholesome so i needed something fast-paced and kinda stabby? gory? just any horror would do. i saw this and since i’ve seen the movie and really liked it, i thought that it would make a lovely interval, just a momentary pause from charles dickens and his english countryside.

this was, as i’d expected it to be, gross, nasty in a way that makes my skin crawl and my hands feel tingly and weak, it’s just the right amount of body horror and that creeping feeling that something’s just gonna jump at you from the dark. i thought that there’s not much could be said about the characters or the writing style itself, there is nothing special about it, but the story and the setting and the way scott smith just plays with these people and puts them in this really really disturbing situations i find really admirable and sort of messed up in a way. it was enjoyable, it recharged me and i’m ready to be back to read some more wholesome, quiet, slow-paced book. the ruins did the job and did it spectacularly in my opinion.
