I love mermaids, I always have, so I don't know why it took me so long to start this series. I really loved the language and names for both people and places. The author uses very descriptive words, to the point where the reader feels like they are there, immersed in the waters with Sera and the others.
I also really liked the deeper message of protecting our oceans. What a great way to shed light on such a vital issue to readers who might not have realized the seriousness. This is done in both subtle and very outspoken ways throughout the story. From the ways that the "terragog" the merls are brought to explains, to the mentions of things tossed and subsequently found in rivers and oceans.
Through the book, we see these mermaids become stronger and more self assured, though it seems they still have a long ways to go. I like the portrayal of females being strong enough to ultimately save the day!
