I’m not sure if my expectations were too high for this book, but it was not my favorite. The plot and the dialogue were a little clunky. I thought everything wrapped up too quickly and the ending seemed rushed
Also, Auntie was straight up abusive to Sophie. There was a theme of intergenerational trauma running through the whole book, but none of the adults redeemed themselves in my eyes. There just wasn’t enough space to address what everyone went through and it all felt a little rushed and insincere (especially the subplot with Lir and his dad making amends)
I did really like the art, though. It was beautiful and whimsical and like the marketing copy says, reminded me of Studio Ghibli
