The Island of Missing Trees
by Elif Shafak
I'm going to 5* this one. I think it's one I might actually end up buying, either audio or kindle, just to relive it a little from time to time. I went with the audio version and really liked it. Two narrators, and the voice/accent of the fig tree really added to the ambience of the story.
Yes ... the voice of the fig tree. The chapters switch POVs and timelines. There is the fig tree, telling her history (first person), and then Ada's story (and that of her parents) told in 3rd person, which also shifts from the present (Ada) to the past.
The writing (especially from the POV of the fig tree) was very lyrical and lovely.
I was able to grab the kindle copy from the library also, and enjoyed looking over it after I finished the audiobook. Re-reading the prologue, which starts out "Once upon a memory" ... there was a little at the end, that I don't know that I really caught upon my first listen, and it was deeply impactful to read it and realize the connection to events later on in the book. The ending also, a bit unexpected there, but I really liked it!
Parental Perspective - I can't recall any language. While nothing at all explicit, there is some premarital sex and a homosexual couple.
