My first Kathy Reichs/Temperance Brennan book and I was so excited to read this! It didn’t disappoint!
A dismembered, nearly fully skeletanised set of remains is found and the pathologist can’t work on them due to the lack of remaining tissue. Call in Dr Brennan, Forensic Anthropologist. What started off as a routine check turned into a serial killer investigation which Dr Brennan races to figure out before she and her most loved ones become the next victims.
Pros:
-The forensic anthropology and anatomy, as well as the police procedure in this are actually quite accurate (even if slightly dramatised) which for someone with a forensic anthropologist degree (hi, that’s me) is really great to see.
-I like the characters we’ve been introduced to so far. Dr Brennan is headstrong and passionate and I’m intrigued to see how some characters story lines play out
-the plot twists in the book were good and I like that you don’t find out who the killer is until the detectives/Brennan actually work it out themselves. It all made sense too, there wasn’t any random ignored facts to make a suspect fit the role fine.
Cons:
-there is a lot of description/naming of buildings and streets. Whilst this may be just something that occurs because this is the first in a series and the author is trying to set the scene, for someone who has never been to Quebec it just felt completely unnecessary, didn’t add to the story, didn’t aid in the imagining of the scene and was just distracting
-same thing kind of applies to one particular scene where dr Brennan is investigating tool marks left on bone. As someone who has some knowledge into the topic even I was completely lost and it was just 4/5 pages of me just reading words. Felt completely out of the story and didn’t add to it at all - especially as it was summarised by an expert in layman terms a few pages later
-whilst I was expecting dr Brennan to go off on her own and be quite headstrong (as I’ve seen the entirety of the bones tv show) I did feel in the book she was really reckless and not just with her safety which bothered me more.
Super excited to read the rest of the series
