This is very well-written, makes me want to read other books by R.F. Kuang. It was not enjoyable to read (listen to) but that’s the point. I can’t think of a more insufferable main character than June, and I enjoyed the bluntness in satirically addressing social media/cancel culture, white superiority complex, racism & the nuances of that (ie there’s more than just outright racism— the microaggressions, victim mentality, even the unconscious bias /racist thoughts we hear June have).
It was painful and cringey and tough to read but so well-done.
The ending felt a bit rushed and didn’t have as much justice as I was hoping. I liked the look into the publishing industry and writing, and also elements of loneliness & privilege too. Overall I recommend it
