On the Mountain
by Riley Hart
This is my first Riley Hart book, but it will not be my last. I was completely floored by not only how good this was but also something that evokes so much emotion and a book that will stick with me for a long time. It's hard to read a book about a cult because of how uncomfortable the things they did are, but the author handled the heavy topic so well. My heart ached for Crow and what he had been through, how he was still struggling, how people treated him for something that was not his fault and how he felt so unworthy of love. What I liked most about this book is that the author brings together two very broken characters who have been hurt in two extremely different ways, and gives them a chance to show each other what real love and care is. I loved how Cyrus showed Crow he was worthy of love, and how Crow did the same. Crow was very clearly outwardly in pain and suffering and it was very evident, but Cyrus hid his and tried to act like everything was sunshine and rainbows when deep down, he was suffering too. This juxtaposition was very interesting to read and I think this made their dynamic even more fascinating. The characters are complicated but at the end of the day, they both wanted the same thing: to love and to be loved. I absolutely shed a few tears during the epilogue and how much Crow was able to grow. I felt so proud of him and his journey and loved knowing that Cyrus was the one to show him how worthy he was of love and that they had each other. This was gutwrenching, beautiful and a story that truly moved me.
