Armada by Ernest Cline
2.0

I don't even know.

Armada is readable to the extreme, but I also got very tired very quickly with how awkward and meta this book got at times.

The multitude of references made sense in [b:Ready Player One|9969571|Ready Player One|Ernest Cline|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1406383612s/9969571.jpg|14863741]. They don't make as much sense here because nobody references sci-fi to that degree in every single conversation they have. At least not every single person you meet will, even if they're all gamers and geeks just like you. It felt too much like the publisher told Cline to pack the book full of them because that's what sold RPO.

Then there's how the book is so very meta. It wasn't subtle at all and felt like Cline saying he knows that we know that the book will seem to use all these popular sci-fi story elements we've seen over the last few decades, but it's okay because he'll let us know that he knows that we know.

And the climax was kind of a big let down.

I didn't hate this book, honest! Like I said, it was incredibly readable and the story moves along at a good pace. My only problem is that I've seen and read this story tons of times and it all felt too familiar without any sort of unique quality to it.

Lex is good people, though.
