The Queen of Ieflaria by Effie Calvin
3.0

The Queen of Ieflaria is a young-adult sapphic fantasy with dragons. It follows Esofi who is coming to the kingdom of Ieflaria to become queen in an arranged marriage only for her betrothed to suddenly die. Her next available option is her betrothed sister Adale, the crown Princess who is known for her drinking and wild ways.

In Calvin's realm homophobia doesn't exist and the marriage of two women is entirely normal. The presence of magic also means that individuals can hold a "change" for short periods in order to help produce heirs. It's an interesting and refreshing premise.

The storyline is split in POVs between Adale and Esofi who were likeable characters. Adale was a little bit more spirited and has some character growth. However, I just found their relationship a little lackluster which disappointed me. I just didn't feel a chemistry between them (although as noted it was an arranged marriage).

The overall world-building is okay and I feel like there's real promise for the future development, however this one felt like a lot of set-up for major plot lines in the future.

Overall this was enjoyable and fairly short read which is nice for fantasy. I'll definitely continue with the series but I wasn't especially blown away by the whole book.
