The Crow Eaters by Bapsi Sidhwa
3.5
funny reflective medium-paced

I finished Bapsi Sidhwa’s comic novel The Crow Eaters last night and it was an enjoyable read! I wouldn’t say it’s a book I’ll be raving about in five years, but it’s not often I read lighthearted books so it was a fun change of pace for me. It was one of the first books written about Parsis in the 80s, and apparently lots of Parsi readers (the author is also Parsi) did not appreciate finding themselves the ones being made fun of 👀 A lot of the comic relief comes from the main character Freddy’s hostile relationship with his mother in law, which can feel quite dated at times.

If you enjoy slice-of-life family sagas, especially ones that focus on groups (in this case Parsis in pre-independence Lahore) that are typically underrepresented in literature, then I’d recommend checking it out - though maybe borrow it from your library as I did
