A Darker Shade of Magic
by V.E. Schwab
i might need a knife now just because there was so much - SO MUCH- stabbing and stabby stabbing in the stabbing in this book that i kind of feel as if i need a knife now just to fit in a bit better!
which is completely fine with me.
what i loved about this book:
- witty characters who where basically breathing sarcasm
- brothers that loved each other and were more than happy to show that
- a strong female who has big ideas about her life and is willing to work for them
- a nice guy who does bad things because it’s what he can do to help
- a team up between to people that shouldn’t work but is held together by stubbornness and sarcasm and wit and a good amount of blood of enemies that they stabbed together - or in other words a dream team!
- an actual ending that leaves the possibility for more but also can count as a good and solid ending in itself if the reader wants to stop after this book!
- also a literal turncoat! (pun! haha! sorry couldn’t resist using that one! had it in my head since the first time the cost was mentioned!) who doesn’t love a coat that you turn inside out and find another coat all together? i certainly enjoyed that. a lot.
- also a thief.
i love thieves! can’t explain why but there is a huge fascination i have with them and i especially love them if they manage to pickpocket without anyone noticing and have a reputation for it and it’s just great okay? i enjoy those characters a lot! so of course i loved schwabs version of that character even more!
what i wish would have been a bit different:
- the length of this book was a tiny bit to much, since a few pages at the beginning and in the middle dragged quiet a bit for me and i had to remind myself that i do want to pick this book up and read it because i really enjoyed it even if it’s a bit slow right now.
- a bit predictable who the bad guys are and i kind of wish that schwab would have chosen a different reason for doing all the bad things because i am not a huge fan of the “because i want it!” toddler rage attack trope at all. and i think schwab shows that she has brighter ideas then that!
all in all?
this was fun and so bloody and filled with murder and mayhem and sarcasm that i enjoyed it at a lot but it’s not my favorite by schwab and i don’t think it’s the best fantasy or even world jumping book out there.
but the characters make the reading worth it and the ideas are great!
still if you want to read this for the fantasy elements alone?
wouldn’t recommend it for that!
if you want stabby fun with magic sprinkels?
this book is for you!
which is completely fine with me.
