Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
3.0

Dexter is your average guy, works as a blood spatter analyst, has a girlfriend and has a hobby ... which just so happens to be killing people, but only those who deserve it (i.e. other murderers etc). Oh yeah...and he's a psychopath.

Right, before I begin I have to say first that I am a massive fan of the television series. I didn't even know it was based on a book until earlier this year. I was so excited to read the series. The show is just brilliant, but this isn't about the show. This is about the book and the book left me feeling a bit ... meh. And I'm so disappointed! Because I really wanted to love it and give it 5 stars. As i read it I guess I was comparing it to the show and maybe that ruined it for me.

Okay, so it's a thriller about a psychopath who kills people, so it's my type of favourite book and I even loosely based my own book "My Dark Self" on the character of Dexter from the show and his Dark Passenger. I enjoyed the inner monologue of his dark thoughts and his sarcastic comments while on the outside appearing perfectly normal. I love the character of Dexter. I think it's a really clever idea.

However, I felt that all the characters apart from Dexter were so ... boring and really not developed at all. The ending was rushed and basically held no detail at all and if I'd read this first and not the show then I'd be completely lost. I will of course read the rest of the series, but I'm in no rush to be honest....
