The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino
5.0

| Book Review | The Devotion of Suspect X.

I remember reading Malice by Keigo Higashi sometime last year and being surprised by the narration and plot. Then I had the chance to read Salvation of a Saint by the same author few days later. I almost didn't remember reading it until @belladonnaoflavender mentioned the title and to my pleasant surprise, I recalled the story as I went through the gist. But this particular novel, The Devotion of Suspect X has always been in my Tbr. And there was no doubt that I'd come to love it merely because Keigo has a spectacular way in twisting the story when one can least expect it.

Yasuko is a single mother who provides a simple life for her daughter Misato. She works at a lunch box shop which pays her enough to live a modest life. Being haunted by her ex-husband Togashi, Yasuko seems distraught. During one such miserable encounter, Yasuko with the help of her daughter kills Togashi in an act of self-defense only to realise later that she's now a criminal. Heroically, her next door neighbour steps in to cover their tracks. Ishigami is a brilliant mathematician who works as a high-school teacher. His hidden feelings for Yasuko makes him come up with a complex plan to evade the policemen. Yasuko seems taken aback that a stranger would go to such lengths to help her. But with a wish to avoid prison, Yasuko goes along with the plan.

What follows next is the investigation undertaken by Detective Kusanagi and a brilliant physicist Yukawa. Yukawa carries out a personal investigation when he realises that his friend from University is now involved in the case. Ishigami is surprised but also shocked to see that his friend is assisting the police knowing fully well how smart the physicist is. Remainder of the book narrates the unique way in which Ishigami formulates a plot to save the people that he loves by manipulating the police. The ending wasn't something that I anticipated and I think this is why I absolutely enjoy Keigo's work. It's refreshing and completely unpredictable all the while sticking to the essence of the story. A gripping book that I devoured in two days and goes without saying that I highly recommend it.
