This book is my new obsession. I bought it right after finishing the ebook.
I loved the atmosphere it created with Dellecher and the plays. The writing was amazing, it really immerses you into the story before it really even starts.
At first the Shakespeare took getting used to but I quickly got into it and it really added to the atmosphere, adding that melodrama.
I really liked how the dynamic of the group shifted throughout the story, with starting out as a tight knit group of friends and devolving as soon as Richard started acting out. I loved how Richard’s presence haunted them even after death, it was like he was the sole reason for all their problems even in death. “Holinshed was wrong: Richard didn’t want to be remembered well—he had never been so forgiving. He wanted to wreak havoc on the rest of us.”
Looking back Oliver was very oblivious to not only his own feelings but how he was viewed by the others and especially James. He saw himself as James’ sidekick while James saw him as his love. I sobbed at the end all through Oliver taking the blame to the epilogue until the letter. I don’t know if the letter makes it better or worse knowing James is most likely alive or that despite that he’s alive but he and Oliver can never be together. Romeo & Juliet indeed.
Filippa definitely knows something about James, “She knows everything.” He frowns, eyes nearly disappearing beneath his thick brows. “People always forget about Filippa,” I add. “And later they always wish they hadn’t.” She’s the secret keeper.
