The Gathering
by C.J. Tudor
Fascinating small-town Alaska setting -- 2024 contemporary but with vampyrs living in poorly-tolerated colonies on the edge of human-populated areas.
I enjoyed the characters and plot for the most part, though definitely felt towards the endlike I'd run out of book before I ran out of plot, and it does finish much more quickly than I'd expected/hoped for.
People who might like this: anyone liking a good police procedural, looking for the Fargo vibe, or a twist on the usual 'vampires are so marvellous' mythology
People who might not: people who like a good bit of worldbuilding around their vampyrs, want to avoid gore (it's not wild, but it is horror-genre), likewise avoiding personal weight references, or prefer small towns to be non-diverse.
Overall, it's not perfect, but it's a good time.
