All the Colors of the Dark
by Chris Whitaker
Thank you so much to PRH Audio for the complimentary audio!
This book was EVERYWHERE before it came out and after it came out. And I did not want to miss the opportunity on reading it. When my book of the month came in and I saw the size of it, I was shocked! I had no clue that it was a 500+ page book!
I am very mixed on how to rate this so I'm going to go between a 4 & 4.5. This book had so much happening. As much as I loved that this book took place over a 25 year period, once I got further ahead I was forgetting characters and small moments that happened in the early years. The book kept me guessing the whole way. I absolutely loved Saint and her loyalty to Patch. You only wish to have their kind of friendship.
"People talk about one life...one chance. But I reckon a single life is made up of a dozen or more roles and and responsibilities. I can count the versions of myself like friend and foe. Mistakes are the detours that remind you of the true way, Saint. To love and be loved is more than can ever be expected, more than enough for a thousand ordinary lifetimes."
I have never read a book by Whitaker before so I was unfamiliar with his style of writing. It was different in the sense that you question things that happen on page but then you find out more about it on the next chapter. It's hard to describe what I mean unless you read it. Several times I would be like "wait what" and flip back or even look ahead. I will say I was happy that with the size of the book, the chapters were SO incredibly short. Like some were even half a page so it made you feel like you were zooming through it.
I paired my reading with the book with the audio. I had no issue with Edoardo Ballerini as the narrator & kudos to him for tackling a 14 hr book all on his own. I was able to up the speed without any issue of the sound being weird. Having the narration really helped keeping the book moving for me.
I am glad I read it & looking forward to talking to other readers about it.
